#VGMA2017: Runtown is African Artist of the Year

Nigerian singer Runtown has been crowned African Artist of the Year at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Propelling him to this height is his continental hit Mad Over You. Competition from Patoranking, Mr. Eazi, Tekno, and Nathaniel Bassey was simply not enough for the singer, who performed alongside Sarkodie during the performance of the latter’s Painkiller. He proceeded to lead the audience through a thrilling rendition of Mad Over You.

Northern-based rapper Fancy Gadam caused a big upset when he was adjudged Best New Act. He came into the awards an underdog, with many tipping Medikal for the award. Medical, who had 7 nominations for this year’s event, won none of them –losing to the likes of M.anifest, and Sarkodie.

The 18th edition, the event is a Charterhouse Ghana production, and has Vodafone as headline sponsor.

I will give 'Rapper of the Year' brand new V8 – Dumelo

Ghanaian actor John Dumelo has promised a “brand new V8” for the winner of the 2017 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) Rapper of the Year.

Mr Dumelo, who was invited together with actress Zynell Zuh on Sunday April 9 to present the award to the winner of that category at this year’s VGMAs, said: “The winner is getting a brand new V8 by me; 2017 model.”

Mr Dumelo, a staunch supporter of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been in the news lately for his involvement in a Toyota V8 Land Cruiser scandal.

Government had set up a task force to retrieve all state vehicles in possession of individuals after the NDC administration of John Mahama handed over to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. One of such vehicles impounded recently was being used by Mr Dumelo.

It remains to be seen whether the actor is serious about his promise to give away a V8 to M.anifest who won Rapper of the Year or intended as a joke on the back of his Toyota V8 Land Cruiser saga

Joe Mettle crowned Artiste of the Year at VGMAs 2017

History was made last Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre as Joe Mettle became the first Gospel act to be adjudged Artiste of the Year at Charterhouse-organised Ghana Music Awards.

For seventeen years of its inception, gospel artistes had earned as many nominations as their secular colleagues but had not been able to clinch the topmost award.

The development coupled with Joe Mettle’s achievements the year under review, led to several gospel artistes and entertainment pundits throwing their weights behind him and calling for the crown to be bestowed on him which eventually saw the light of day.

Joe Mettle beat competition from Sarkodie, EL, Stonebwoy, MzVee and Medikal. He was also adjudged Gospel Artiste of the Year.

Stonebwoy also made history as the only act to win the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year and Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year for three consecutive years.

VVIP defended two titles: Best Group of the Year and Best Collaboration of the Year with their ‘Alhaji’ song which featured Patoranking.

For the first time, Flowking Stone walked home with an award as his song ‘Go Low’ beat Guru’s ‘Samba’, Donzy’s ‘Club’, Sarkodie’s ‘RNS’, Criss Waddle’s ‘Bie Gya’, Kofi Kinaata’s ‘Sweetie Pie’ and ‘Alhaji’ by VVIP to win Hiplife Song of the Year.

For his outstanding contribution to the music industry, Papa Yankson was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award which he dedicated to his mentor, C.K Man.
As predicted by many entertainment critics, Runtown who was the only African act invited to the event, picked African Artiste of the Year award.

The colourful event solely hosted by Anita Erskine of Starr FM saw performances from Sarkodie, Kofi Kinaata, Ernest Opoku, Nacee, Adina, Akwaboah, EL, Runtown and a host of others.

Ghanaians voted democratization of violence - Suhuyini

Member of Parliament for Tamale North Alhassan Suhuyini, has stated that Ghanaian’s have voted for democratization of violence when they voted for President Akufo-Addo in the 2016 general elections.

Speaking on Radio Gold’s ‘Alhaji & Alhaji’ in wake of pro-New Patriotic Party group Delta Forces attack on the a Circuit Court in the Ashanti region, Alhassan Suhuyini said Ghanaian’s have voted for the democratization of violence and are reaping the effect of it.

“I am surprise that we are all pretending that we voted for the democratization of violence and yet we are surprise or pretending to be surprise when the fruits are beginning to show because clearly the warning signs has always been on the wall yet we ignored and as a people we decided that we want to try this democratization of violence and that is exactly what we are reaping and for me what happening as far as the operations of Delta Force, invisible force and all the other forces are concern does not surprise me as much as the surprise that civil societies and media and well-meaning Ghanaians are displaying because have we not been told about our current president before we was elected to be president, beyond what we have been told what haven’t we seen you can forgive people who perhaps are younger than 18 or perhaps just turn 18 in the last election..”

“ but he is somebody who has been in our politics for a very long time and so even if you did not believe the cautions you saw some of the things that he supervise as an active politician in these country I’m we remember what his very good friend Kofi Kumson said when he tried the first time to lead the NPP in to an election his very good cautioned this nation that he won’t be able to sleep with that man as president, why do you think he express those fears he said It clearly that he won’t be able to sleep with that man as president so why are we surprise that we are unable to sleep today that he is president that was his friend..”

I’m excited to host the Red Carpet - Elikem

Finally, the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is here and come Saturday, April 8, all roads will lead to the Accra International Conference Centre where the event will take place.
A very important aspect of the event is the red carpet where celebrities flaunt various designs. It is no doubt a very exciting aspect of the ceremony and patrons and viewers around the globe look forward to it.
This year’s red carpet will be hosted by TV and radio presenter Berla Mundi and actor cum fashion designer Elikem Kumordzie better known as Elikem Da Tailor.
Showbiz caught up with Elikem last Tuesday and he was super excited about the task ahead, “ I am an extrovert and an entertainer so I am going to bring both to bear on the red carpet come Saturday,” were his initial words.
He however did not dispute the fact that he is a bit nervous about the whole thing, “Well, I must admit that nerves are running up and down but I am going to take it nice and easy and ensure that I deliver,” he said.
According to the former Big Brother Africa Housemate, the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is the biggest event on the nation’s entertainment calendar and he does not intend to let the organisers down for believing in him.
“Whatever was seen in me that made them pick me should be brought to bear on the night, for them to put me on the red carpet means that they obviously saw something in me and I don’t intend to disappoint at all,” he said.
Most importantly, Elikem says he intends to be himself as much as possible, “trust that I will be myself, I will try and be as Elikem as possible,” he concluded.
Talking about what he will wear on the night, Elikem said he will style himself and keep it simple.

I didn't apply for Ghana job — Cameroun coach

Cameroun national team coach Hugo Broos has denied availing himself for the Ghana national team job. The Belgian, who led the Indomitable Lions to Nations Cup victory in Gabon a few months ago, was confirmed as one of three coaches who were interviewed by the Ghana Football Association (FA) search committee last week.
The Black Stars job has, however, been landed by Ghanaian James Kwasi Appiah who returns to the job after parting ways with the Ghana FA in September, 2014.
In what appears a U-turn to save his job, the 64-year-old sharply rejected ever having contacts with the West African giants.
"…There is no reason for me to leave Cameroon. "Forget about my departure or resignation, and don't listen to rumours that I am in negotiations with other federations,” Broos said at a press conference on Tuesday.
The former Anderlecht and Club Brugge boss also disclosed discussions for a contract extension with Cameroon.
"The FA president and I had already discussed a prolongation," Broos vehemently denied the obvious.

The coach also apologised for his outburst at the conditions of service after his side faced challenges during the international break last week. "I would like to apologise for exaggeration. I have certainly humiliated the Cameroonian people," he stated.

Manager of sachet water company on trial for robbery

A manager of a sachet water company has been hauled before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a family of items valued at Gh¢29,300 at gunpoint.
The accused person, Edward Kodjo Tawiah, in the company of an accomplice identified only as Eric, aka Abodam, who is now at large, are alleged to have attacked the family at Haatso, near Accra, on March 28.
They are reported to have ransacked the house and taken away some valuables.
Tawiah has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and three counts of robbery, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
He has been remanded into police custody, to reappear on April 18, 2017.
Robbery operation
The prosecutor, Superintendent of Police Mr Kweku Bempah, told the court that at 3 a.m. on March 28, 2017, Tawiah and Abodam, in face masks and armed with a pistol, broke into a house at Haatso and forcibly entered the bedroom of the couple living in the house.
They ordered them to show them where they (couple) kept the money they had brought to the house the previous day.
The man, the prosecutor said, told the robbers that there was no money in the house. That made the robbers drag him from the bed and tie his hands and those of his wife.
“They then took the man’s phone, valued at GH¢1,300, his gold necklace, valued at GH¢8,000, and his wife’s mobile phone, valued at GH¢5,000, and her engagement and wedding rings, valued at GH¢6,000,’’ the prosecutor said.
Police intervention
Superintendent Bempah said the robbers entered the couple’s 14-year-old son’s room and took his mobile phone, valued at GH¢750, and a laptop, valued at GH¢2,000.
He said the couple’s daughter, whose room had not been seen by the robbers, made a phone call to her friend, who in turn called a police patrol team.
The police patrol team rushed to the house and Abodam, on seeing the team, fired at them and they responded by shooting back.

The robbers ran to the first floor and jumped through a window to the ground. Tawiah hurt himself in the process and was arrested.  Abodam managed to escape.

Gloomy picture of children begging for alms on streets - Need for urgent attention

The sight of children, both from Ghana and foreign countries who beg for alms on the streets across the country, paints a gloomy picture. According to the Child Rights International (CRI), a non-governmental organisation concerned with the welfare of children, this calls for the strengthening of the social support system and the institution of proactive measures to ensure that the children are protected, taken off the streets and integrated with their families.
The Executive Director of Child Right International, Mr Bright Kwela Appiah, has ,therefore, urged the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Interior to take the appropriate action to repatriate all non-Ghanaian children who beg for alms on the streets of the country.
Addressing the organisation’s media child protection accountability series, Mr Appiah said the ministries must engage the embassies of the countries from where the child beggars have migrated to Ghana to facilitate their safe repatriation.
Mr Appiah, who expressed concern over the growing rate of children on the streets which put the lives of the children at risk and expose them to sexual predators, said non-Ghanaians could also be recognised under Ghana’s social safety net in order to make it possible for them to access rights of Ghanian children within Ghana’s Social protection system.
Activities
He said another gloomy picture was the issue of Ghanaian children engaged in selling at traffic intersections, carrying loads in market places, begging for alms or being used by adults who are either aged or persons living with disability to beg for alms, and sometimes clean wind screen of vehicles at the various traffic intersections.
Although the organisation could not give details on statistics on the total number of children on the streets of Ghana, it said the phenomenon was becoming alarming, pointing out that, "Streetism has gradually become one of the most widespread child protection issue in cities across the countries such as Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi and Tamale."
Mr Appiah said children of schooling age were found roaming the street during school hours, making it impossible for them to access their rights to education, safety, quality healthcare among others.
Sleeping places
At night, he said these children slept on pavements, in front of stores and other places without proper shelter, and at the mercy of mosquitoes and sexual predators.
The children on the street, he said also stood the danger of being recruited into dangerous vices such as armed robbery and prostitution.
Mr Appiah said the CRI recently undertook a study where the activities of street children in some parts of Accra were observed for a month.
He said when some of the children were interviewed, they disclosed that they engaged in begging and selling on the street due to their parents inability to fulfil their role as parents.
Some of the children, Mr Appiah said claimed they were instructed by their parents to beg for money for the upkeep of the family.
The study, he said, found that most of the children were migrants from rural areas to the city with their parents in search for financial sustainability.

To nib the menace in the bud, he entreated the public to return to the communal system of child upbringing where caring for children was a communal responsibility and not just that of the parent of the child.

Confusion as Delta Force frees 13 accused persons on remand

Thirteen members of the Delta Force who were arraigned before a Kumasi Circuit court on Thursday for forcibly throwing out the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator have been remanded in custody to reappear on April 20, 2017.
However, after the court hearing, the 13 accused persons absconded before the police could take them into custody.
They were charged with the offence of conspiracy to commit crime, assault on a public officer, causing unlawful damage and preventing a public officer from doing his lawful duty.
Graphic Online’s Kumasi correspondent, Donald Ato Dapatem who was in court on Thursday reported that, it all started with whispering and shouts of "no, no," when the court presided over by Mary Nsenkyire said the 13 should be remanded into custody.
According to Dapatem, immediately word went out that the accused persons have been remanded, some of their supporters who were outside the courtroom, started destroying the notice board at the court and surged towards the court room, but the police prevented them.
In the ensuing melee, those who had been remanded left the court and joined those outside and moved away from the court claiming that they were going to the party headquarters.

Pastor, 24, dragged to court over sexual assault on a minor

A 24-year-old Pastor has been dragged before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly inserting his fingers into the genitals of a three-year-old girl at Chorkor near Accra. The accused person, Pastor Wisdom Kusorgbor, is the Head pastor of Soldiers of the Cross Ministries, located at Korle-Gonno near Accra.
He was charged with indecent assault to which he pleaded not guilty.
Hearing of the case continues on April 11, 2017.

Facts
Per the facts of the case, as presented by the prosecutor, Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire, the complainant is the mother of the three-year-old girl.
Pastor Kusorgbor, he said, stays s at Korle-Gonno but got to know the victim through his (Kusorgbor’s) mother who lives in the same compound house with the complainant.
The prosecutor explained that whenever Pastor Kusorgbor visited this mother, he gave his mobile phone to the three-year-old child to watch cartoons.
On December 28, 2016, Inspector Atimbire said Pastor Kusorgbor visited the mother, but did not meet her at home.
“Pastor Kusorgbor carried the three-year-old child to his mother’s room to watch cartoons on his phone. While she was watching the cartoons, he inserted his finger and used his penis to brush her vagina but did not penetrate,’’ he said.

How ‘Micheal Bolton’s song’ saved me from committing suicide – Mr. Ibu

Nollywood Actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu has narrated how he almost jumped into a well to commit suicide. According to him, several years ago the man he was living with at Ajao Estate area of Oshodi, Lagos, Nigeria threw him out of his house with his loads.
According to him, several years ago the man he was living with at Ajao Estate area of Oshodi, Lagos, Nigeria threw him out of his house with his loads.
Mr. Ibu, who was a guest on Brilla FM with Murphy Ijemba, said after his friend threw him out, he had already opened a well to jump inside when he heard the song from Michael Bolton being played from a neighbour’s house.
“I went back from where I was standing before and the guy who was living in the next building, he was playing Michael Bolton and the title of the song was “when I am back on my feet again.” I listened to it. I covered the well back, I went back closer and the man singing was talking to me straight. After I listened to that music, I said God would have hated me if I had killed myself. God would have driven me away from his kingdom. I would have been in hell,” he disclosed.
“After the music finished playing, I discovered my new self and I said, well, the guy threw out my bags and clothes on the floor, I left them there. I was still wearing what I wore that day. I left the compound and I was looking for a place like uncompleted building or abandoned vehicle so that I can clean it up to sleep.
“I saw a trailer parked and I decided to sleep there, all of a sudden, in that trailer, I saw the marks of dogs and I decided not to sleep there anymore for fear of the dogs. I worked into the street and I saw some crowd gathered at Ajao Estate, I met some colleagues, I was given a script to read but because I had not eaten anything and my sight was bad, I could not read it.
“There is name I always prayed for; she told me to come and stay in her house, she was just a fan, she wanted me to follow her to her boy friend’s house; I followed her since I don’t have a place to sleep. When we got there, the boyfriend travelled. We got to a street called Adetola Aguda, I remembered the number I was given sometimes ago, it was 125 and I searched for it.
“Coincidentally, that my friend came back from Germany the day before. He told me that wherever I live in Lagos I must park out today. The guy took me to my house and saw my bags and loads outside, I first lied to him that I wanted to travel, which was why I brought out the load. I carried my bag and clothes and we went back to his house and he gave me a room; I went in and started crying again. I reserve my biggest thanks to that girl, one Sandra Eze, God will pick you up and collect your case file. Everything must be yours,” he narrated.
Mr. Ibu said due to what happened to him in the past, he could not watch anybody shedding tears before him, saying that
“I go the extra mile to help them, I don’t have to know you, I have taken people out of this country who are not my relatives, I just met them on the streets. I don’t have to know you, the issue is that I just reflected what happened to me years back, I made up my mind that assisting people will be a key thing in my life.”

Spare Parts dealers meet govt over tax cuts

Dealers of spare parts at Abossey Okai in Accra have told Citi Business News they are in talks with government to scrap the import levy on imported spare parts.
The traders were thrown in a fix when it emerged that they may not enjoy any tax cuts due to the rules and regulations regarding the ECOWAS common external tariff.
There were agitations from importers on Monday, April 3, 2017 after news broke that the spare parts dealers may not enjoy tax cuts as promised by government in the 2017 budget statement at least not during the tenure of this government.
Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta during the budget statement asserted that the spare parts dealers will be exempted from taxes at the ports.
But Citi Business News’ checks reveal that the traders may not have the cuts because Ghana signed onto the ECOWAS common external tariff policy last year.

A review of the tariff can only be made after a minimum of five years.
But the spare parts dealers tell Citi Business News despite the development, they are confident government will still go ahead and implement the tax cuts.
Financial Secretary of the Association, Nana Kwabena Peprah said they are in talks with government on the issue.
“We have given out our list that this law will cover and we are waiting for the government to respond to it and implement it.”
Nana Peprah further said he spends about Ghc5,000 on import levy alone on goods worth Ghc20,000; that figure is minus other taxes he has to pay at the ports before he is able to clear his goods.
Despite government’s delay in clearing some of his costs at the ports, he explains that the only reason it is being delayed is because both parties are looking at how best the move will be of benefit to the two groups.
“We pay five thousand cedis on import duty alone then we pay VAT among others, but we will still push it. We are a sovereign state, these are laws governing all the blocks so we will force the government to implement the law and then use it as a bargaining power,” he said.
An executive member of GUTA, Benjamin Yeboah is also confident government will soon implement the tax cuts to the relief of the importers.
“We are quite positive that this decision is not just a say. The ECOWAS treaty will not affect government’s decisions. It will inure to the benefit of everyone, not just those in the spare parts business because we are all consumers and it should be our prayer that it works out. I know and I’m convinced it will work out,”he stressed.
Meanwhile, Citi Business News’ checks also reveal that some dealers have already reduced the prices of some of their wares even before the implementation of the tax cuts.

Meningitis not cause of KUMACA deaths, it’s purely spiritual – Students

Some students of Kumasi Academy say they are taking the official cause of death of four of their mates with a pinch of salt.
According to them, there is no truth in the autopsy report which cites meningitis as the cause of death.
Speaking to Akoma FM on Wednesday, a group of students, who claimed they had to return to school due to the end-of-the examinations, said they are not satisfied with the results of the autopsy conducted. It is not meningitis, they said, it is spiritual.
They narrated how some of the deceased students had to complain of headaches and within a short period vomit blood prior to their deaths.
One of the school boys, who spoke on anonymity, said all the four students who died are from the same house. According to them, students of that house killed a snake which is said to be a river deity; thus exacting punishment by killing the students.
They expressed surprise how doctors had initially said they could not tell the cause of death but now claim it is meningitis.
On Wednesday, at a press conference, the Ashanti Region Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, said a team of experts and professionals from the Ghana Health Service at the district, regional and national levels as well as “an experienced colleague” from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the School of Medical Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology proposed meningitis as the cause of the deaths.
Mr Osei Mensah said there were 26 suspected cases but since the death of the students, none has been recorded so far, at least since March 31. “We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation so that cases can be detected and managed appropriately,” he said.
‘No boarding’
The four students – one in Form 1 and three in Form 2 – died in a spate of one week. The students say they are not in a good mood to write the exams and would rather the exams were postponed to next term.
They said they will be attending a funeral of one of the deceased on Thursday, April 6, a situation which does not put them in a right state of mind for the terminal exams.
Some said the boarding facility should be shut down and they will opt for day from next term.

Host of Joy FM’s flagship news analysis programme Newsfile Wednesday survived a fatal accident which killed one person instantly.
Samson Lardy Anyenini was returning to Accra from Tema when the accident occurred on the Accra-Tema Motorway.
Details about the accident are sketchy but another vehicle heading to Tema is believed to have skidded off its lane, somersaulted and tumbled on Lardy Anyenini’s Nissan Pathfinder killing the driver of that car instantly.
On his facebook wall, Lardy Anyenini posted a picture of his mangled car with the inscription: “Pray – Saved by Grace. I was Accra bound after a court session in Tema. He was Tema bound. How his vehicle found itself on top of mine before it headed for the bush killing him I can’t tell. All I saw was his car in the skies. All I realized was I was alive after it landed on mine. Thanks to Dcs Caesar, Serwaa and colleagues @ 37 for the special swift care. Dr says I am just fine. #God #ScariestMotorwayExperienceEver.”

#VGMANostalgia: 2002 – of Lord Kenya, the stage god

No rapper quite commercialized hiplife in the late 90s and early 2000 like Lord Kenya. Obrafour is credited for his depth, Nananom, NFL, Reggie Rockstone, Akyeame all as pioneers, and Buk-Bak for a modern sleight, but the Sika Baa rapper (born Abraham Philip Akpor Kojo Kenya) brought abundant traction to the movement, many would argue.

With a consistent offering of five records in as many years, he quickly became your ultimate Ghanaian superstar –something like the modern-day Shatta Wale.

Even now, several years after he has walked away from the celebrity of music to take up the Lord’s work, his name is mentioned with reverence, and songs he released about two decades ago still experience radio presence like they were published recently. The lifespan of a modern song usually doesn’t exceed a few months, and so the fact that his music is present on our airwaves at all speaks volumes, especially when, since becoming a pastor, he has constantly requested media houses to stop playing his songs.

A story is told about how once, at a local radio station in Accra, he was forced to perform from his car, because the thick crowd of admirers that had gathered around him was simply impenetrable. Many other stories abound about how his concerts were characterised by rowdiness, and there was violent pushing and shoving for his clothes when he threw them into the audience.

2002 is a momentous year not just for Kenya, but for the genre in general. Really, until he swept four awards (including Artist of the Year) in that edition of the Ghana Music Awards, hiplife was not regarded with the same seriousness as, say, highlife. Controversial as it may sound, him (a rap act) winning Artist of the Year legitimized that type of music, and secured mainstream acceptance for the genre. He truly opened the floodgates for other rappers, which is why perhaps 10 out of the 12 acts who have won Artist of the Year since him have been hiplife people: Kontihene (2003), V.I.P (2004, 2011), Obour (2005), Kwaw Kese (2008), Okyeame Kwame (2008), Sarkodie (2010, 2012), R2Bees (2013), and EL (2016).

His style, like his concert, was fierce and reminded you of a certain 2Pac Shakur. Even his love songs were delivered with a fearless demeanor. Again, like 2Pac, it was clear that he had so much to say in painfully limited time. Still, within that short spate, he did a lot of saying.

Every one of his performances was striking for some reason. You never knew what to expect when you attended a Lord Kenya gig, and it gave you a rush every time.

He was unstoppable. His voice was too husky to be any good at singing, but he sang. His colleagues held on to new music to allow for old ones to completely ebb, but he was constantly ready with a record. He flew off stages and broke his leg, but he was back in a couple of months, rousing thousands with renewed vigor.

Kenya truly led the pack with his stage presence, and raised the bar so high that, even today, it still remains to be matched. Even in the recording booth, veteran producer Zapp Mallet (who worked on a significant amount of songs on his catalogue) once recounted in an interview, Lord Kenya was something else.
And then suddenly, somewhere in 2004 his performances began to lose fire. He would pick up the mic and forget his lines. He was constantly fatigued, and there were occasions when his sets were simply abysmal. In a tell-all interview with broadcaster Deloris Frimpong- Manso (Delay) years later, he would confess to the use of a cocktail of illicit drugs as the reason for the volatile feature of his craft. Stardom is a dangerous thing.

He did make a return though, in 2006, with Born Again. Heavily themed on sentiments of compunction, it chalked significant reception, and was subtle notice of things to come as, soon after, he went into full-time ministry.

Ye Sum Sika, the album with which he ascended GMA royalty rained masterpieces: Mr. P.O.P, Enwom No, Mobrowa, Medo etc. It topped local charts for 34 weeks straight.

Also picking 4 awards at GMA 2002 was (unsurprisingly) Daasebre Gyamenah, who’s 1999 hit Kokooko was a major springboard for the rapper. A dynamic duo, they proved what majestic art could erupt when the best of both worlds united creatively. Kokooko is archetypical hiplife, and is among the most important contributions to the genre till date.

Gyamenah passed last year, and Kenya caters for the Lord’s flock, but the Kenya era is no doubt a special moment in GMA history.

*This year’s edition of the Vodafone –sponsored Ghana Music Awards comes off at the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday April 8th. EL, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Joe Mettle, MzVee, Medikal are all in the running for the coveted award of Artist of the Year.

I rap like a chameleon - Captain Planet

Captain Planet, a member of music group, 4x4 has said he sees himself as an underground artiste who continues to learn in the music industry to become a better person.

According to him, he does not see himself as an A class artiste who has produced almost nineteen hit songs but rather as an underground artiste who is working to be recognised by the world.

"I always see myself as an underground artiste and I am always learning. I am not in the industry to compete but to cut a brand for myself. So all those beefing I don't engage in all those things because I did not come to Accra to just look at the see but to make some money and send it to my mother in the village."

The artiste whose rap lines have always been criticised as being weak indicated that he is like a chameleon who can rap on any beat and is dynamic with his style of rap.

"I am like a chameleon I have different styles of rapping any beat you give me I can rap. I know a lot of people who think I am dope and I know some people who will say I am wack. For me I leave it to the public to judge my performance."

He revealed that his wife who works with Facebook does not pay the bills as being speculated and that she married him for who he is and not because he is a ‘celebrity’ and neither did he marry her for because of her influence.

On how he takes "insults" from the current artistes he said: "when we started, these guys were in Senior High School and when we're supposed to perform on TV 3 Music Music, they stay awake to watch us and clap for us so I just see them as people trying to now come up".

Government must rethinks tax retention policy - Yofi Grant

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) officials have met with the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to seek a review of the tax retention policy captured in the 2017 budget and economic policy statement of government.

The policy, requires all companies, including importers, who qualify for tax and duty exemptions to pay their taxes upfront to be refunded in 30days.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Yofi Grant, speaking at a meeting with the members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Accra said the policy needs a rethink hence the high-level meeting.

“I must say here that, a recent policy or statement that came out of the budget presentation that makes things difficult at the ports and for businesses is the tax retention, where companies are being asked to pay taxes upfront to be refunded in 30days. We have had a big meeting about it, and the conclusion was that it was a bit of a difficulty because if you are business and you came into Ghana with a net worth of about US$500 million and you have to pay these taxes to be refunded to you later, it could be a major cashflow issue. And it will also significantly and negatively impact on your business. So, we need to look at it and take it off.”

The high-level meeting comes on the heels of a March 21, 2017 letter from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), signed by Commissioner Kuudamnuru John Vianney of the Customs Division, to all ports stations in the country, directing the implementation of the policy as captured in the budget and approved by Parliament.

The letter sighted by the B&FT states that: “The government had put in a policy that requires all applicants who qualify for exemption from import duties and taxes to make prior payments and then make a claim for a refund of the amount paid.”

The letter further directed the tax officials to immediately implement the policy, adding: “You are therefore to ensure strict adherence to the policy and report any problems for redress”.

Mr. Grant stressed the need for government to do more to make Ghana the investment hub and the first choice for any person thinking of investing in Africa.

“We also have to take off taxes on raw material for production, but before we do that, we need to clearly define what production and manufacturing is. That will let us know exactly who qualifies for these tax exemptions,” he said.

He was also of the view that; the business community will have to interact more with government in finding solutions to existing challenges and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

“There are still a lot of things that we ought to do, if we want to become an investment attractive country. Now, why the sudden real focus on investments? For those of you who have studied and followed the economy quiet closely. We inherited an economy that had a major fiscal challenge, because all our revenues were eaten up by recurrent expenditure, and so the government really has no fiscal space as we speak to do any development. But the government’s purpose is to create an environment where the people are happy by attracting investments,” Mr. Grant said.

Per an arrangement between businessman, Mr Alfred Agbesi Woyome and the Attorney General, with regards to the refund of the GH¢51.2 million he owes the state, he was supposed to have made a second part payment of GH¢5million by April 1, 2017, but checks by Graphic Online indicates that no payment has been made as of now.

Mr Woyome in a commitment letter dated October 27, 2016 to the Attorney General and signed by his lawyer, Mr Ken Anku said: “Our client has a clear intention to pay the said judgement debt and that Woyome, as a law-abiding citizen of Ghana, has and is always willing to pay the adjudged sum of money by instalment, given the opportunity, contrary to any perception otherwise.”

On November 8, 2016, Mr Woyome in another letter to the outfit of the then Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, proposed to pay the outstanding sum by quarterly instalments and subsequently refunded GH¢4 million which represented part payment of the GH¢51.2 million he owed the state.

The second part payment was due April 1, 2017 but checks by Graphic Online at the AG’s office indicates that no payment has been made as of now.

When Graphic Online contacted Mr Woyome via telephone on Wednesday afternoon for a comment, he deferred responses to his lawyer, Mr Ken Anku.

Through his lawyers, he promised to pay the outstanding balance by quarterly instalments of GH¢5 million, commencing April 1, 2017.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, then headed by Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong filed an application at the Supreme Court to request for an oral examination of Woyome but had to discontinue the application when the first GH¢4 million was paid.

A letter dated November 7, 2016 and signed by a Chief State Attorney, Mrs Dorothy Afriyie-Ansah, acknowledged receipt of a cheque for GH¢4 million but five months afterwards, the second instalment was yet to be paid.

On April 6, 2016, the Attorney-General initiated garnishee proceedings against the managers of the ADB, uniBank (Ghana) Limited and UT Bank, bankers of Woyome.

As of the end of 2016, the garnishee had yielded the following amounts: GH¢966.58, GH¢29,515.95, GH¢1,008.70, US$98.17, US$32,779.68, US$223.08 and Euros 1,226.72 which have since been paid into the bank account of the Attorney-General’s office at the Bank of Ghana.

HIV Gay Man, 27, Sleeps With Over 500 Men

A 27-year-old homosexual who is HIV positive has made a stunning revelation, claiming that he has had anal sex with over 500 men mostly through unprotected sex.

“[I have slept] with a lot [of men]…more than 500 [men] and I have had no complications whatsoever. I used to list and I got to 250 and that was in 2012.”

Benji (not his real name) who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 2012 stated that he enjoys unprotected sex but does not prevent any of his clients who wants to use a condom.

Personally I don’t enjoy condoms…I am still having unprotected sex, if you value your life why wouldn’t you put it on because I wouldn’t ask you to take it off,” Benji made the shocking confession in an interview with Starr FM’s Atiewin Mbilla Lawson.

Benji adds that he started having same-sex during his days in secondary school where he also coerced some junior students into having oral sex with him.

My first experience with anal sex was during my first year in High School, I hadn’t experienced penetration until then. It was in 2007 when we were experiencing the first load power shedding…We wouldn’t go for preps and that is where we do our own thing.”

Ghana’s laws are silent on homosexuality but persons found to be engaging in such acts are mostly attacked and brutally assaulted.

Most African countries also frown on the act and in some countries people suspected to be homosexuals are jailed or killed.

In February this year, the Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye called for the amendment of Ghana’s laws to completely ban homosexuality and make it illegal.

Manhyia North MP gives cash to striking NPP communicators

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North Constituency in the Ashanti region, Collins Owusu Amankwah has given an undisclosed amount to communicators of the party in the region.

Last week members of New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team said they had lost interest in government to provide them jobs as they were promised in opposition urging President Akufo-Addo to wake up to their problems.

“It has been nearly four months since power was won, and we have absolutely no indication of faith in our leadership of the communications directorate”, members of the Ashanti Regional communications team wrote officially to suspend their activities until further notice.

“Government by now would have a sense of direction regarding appointments and jobs for our members who by defending the party on radio, television and other platforms contributed to the party’s victory”.

“We also have competencies to be their spokespersons, press secretaries, government appointees and others” the members stated in a press release.

The MP swiftly responded to the plight of the communicators and gave them an undisclosed amount of money through his special assistant, Mr. Victor Osei Owusu duly acknowledged by Kwasi Kyei, the Communications Director

According to him, this is the second time this year, that the MP extended such a gesture your benevolent to communicators, with the first being his act to host and commend them for their contribution towards the party’s victory in 2016 in early January.

“This gesture of extreme generosity on your part has reassured communicators that, there are people like you in our great party who really cares for their welfare. It is, therefore, our hope and prayers that, the Almighty God blesses and replenish all what you have given out”, he added

One arrested over murder of Nigerian school girl

The Northern regional police command has arrested a male adult in connection with a suspected contract killing incident involving a 12-year-old class five school girl of Nigerian descent at Gblo-kpalsi, a waterlogged suburb of Tamale.

The suspect, Chucku Nonya Ebunam, was rounded up at Asamankese in the Eastern region after he and others (still at large) allegedly gang raped before strangling the minor to death with a red handkerchief.

Earlier Police findings revealed that the girl was subjected to a suffocating sexual assault before being killed on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, in the room of her parents, who were away at work.

The victim had returned from school and was preparing to join her parents who operate a mini kiosk at another suburb when the suspects attacked her and caused the atrocity before fleeing.

Residents heard loud screams in the neighbourhood largely occupied by wealthy Nigerian nationals and called police to report a robbery incident.

Police raced in only to found the deceased lying motionless with a red scarf tightly clutched around her neck and watery substance around her private part.

The 33-year-old suspect, according to police spokesman, ASP Yussif Tanko, fled the neighborhood immediately after the incident and went into hiding.

ASP Tanko said he was arrested upon a tip-off and has been transferred to Tamale to assist investigation.

He said Chucku Ebunam will face three charges; murder, rape and robbery, if he is found connected to the crime.
